Flu Vaccination Service - Alton Pharmacy, Hampshire
The flu vaccination service at Alton Pharmacy gives the community of Alton and the surrounding villages of Hampshire a quick, convenient way to be protected against seasonal influenza. Our pharmacists are trained and accredited to deliver flu jabs to both NHS-eligible patients and to anyone who would simply like the reassurance of being vaccinated privately. There is no need to book a separate appointment with your GP – in most cases you can be seen, assessed and vaccinated during a single short visit to the pharmacy.
What is flu and why does the vaccine matter?
Influenza, commonly known as flu, is a contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. It is not the same as a heavy cold. Flu tends to come on suddenly and can leave an otherwise healthy adult in bed for a week or more with a high temperature, aching muscles, exhaustion, a dry cough and a sore throat. For most people flu is unpleasant but self-limiting; for others it can be far more serious, leading to complications such as bronchitis, pneumonia, or a worsening of existing long-term conditions, and in some cases hospital admission.
The influenza viruses in circulation change from one winter to the next, which is why a new vaccine is produced every year and why the flu jab is recommended annually rather than as a one-off. Each season the strains that are most likely to spread are reviewed and the vaccine is reformulated to match them as closely as possible. Having last year’s vaccination does not protect you adequately this year, so an annual top-up is important if you want to stay protected.
Who can have a free NHS flu vaccination?
A large number of people qualify for a flu vaccination free of charge on the NHS because they are at higher risk of becoming seriously unwell. Eligibility is set nationally and can be reviewed each season, but the groups who are usually entitled to a free vaccination include the following.
- Adults aged 65 and over, including anyone who reaches their 65th birthday before the end of March in the current flu season.
- Adults under 65 who live with a long-term health condition, such as asthma or another chronic respiratory illness, heart disease, chronic kidney or liver disease, diabetes, a neurological condition, or a weakened immune system.
- Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy, as the vaccine helps protect both mother and baby.
- People living in a residential or nursing home, and those who are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if the carer falls ill.
- Household contacts of someone who has a weakened immune system, and frontline health and social care workers.
If you think you may be eligible but are not certain, please speak to our pharmacy team. We can check the current criteria with you and, where you qualify, your NHS flu vaccination will be given at no cost to you. We are pleased to be able to offer NHS flu vaccinations directly from the pharmacy, which means you do not have to wait for a GP appointment to become available.
Private flu vaccinations for everyone else
If you do not fall into one of the NHS-eligible groups, you can still be vaccinated at Alton Pharmacy through our private flu vaccination service. Many working-age adults choose to be vaccinated privately each autumn because they want to reduce their chances of losing time at work, of passing flu on to vulnerable family members, or of simply feeling unwell over the winter months. Parents often ask about the service when planning ahead for the colder season.
The private service uses the same high-quality, licensed vaccines and is delivered by the same accredited pharmacists. The consultation and administration are carried out to exactly the same professional standard as an NHS vaccination. Please ask a member of the team for the current price and for details of the vaccine being used this season before you decide to go ahead.
When is the best time to have your flu jab?
Flu tends to circulate during the colder months, typically from late autumn through to early spring. The ideal time to be vaccinated is in the autumn, before flu begins to spread widely in the community. This gives your body the week or two it usually needs to build up its protective response, so that you are covered as the season gets under way.
That said, it is never too late to benefit. If you have not managed to be vaccinated by the time winter arrives, it is still worthwhile having your jab, because flu can continue to circulate well into the new year. Our pharmacy team will be happy to advise you on timing based on the current season.
How to book and what to expect
Booking your flu vaccination at Alton Pharmacy is straightforward. You are welcome to call us on 01420 83176, to ask in person at the counter, or to drop in during opening hours. Booking ahead helps us make sure a pharmacist is available to see you promptly, although we will always do our best to fit you in.
Before your vaccination you will be asked to complete a short consultation form and the pharmacist will ask you a few simple questions about your health, any allergies and any medication you take. This is to confirm that the flu vaccine is suitable and safe for you. The injection itself takes only a moment and is given into the upper arm. Afterwards you will be asked to wait in the pharmacy for a short time so the team can make sure you feel well before you leave.
Side effects from the flu vaccine are usually mild and short-lived. You may notice some tenderness, redness or slight swelling where the injection was given, and occasionally a mildly raised temperature or aching muscles for a day or so. These reactions are a normal sign that your immune system is responding and they settle quickly. The flu vaccine cannot give you flu, as the vaccines used do not contain live influenza virus.
Protecting yourself and those around you
Being vaccinated does more than protect you. When you have your flu jab you also help to reduce the spread of influenza to the people around you – including young children, elderly relatives, and anyone with a health condition that places them at greater risk. This is particularly important if you live with, care for, or regularly visit someone who is vulnerable.
